The smear (or Pap smear) is a routine exam, performed as part of screening for cervical cancer. This test involves taking superficial cells from the cervix. It is performed during a pelvic exam. The sample is then examined under a microscope in a cytology laboratory. Depending on the appearance of the cells, it can be assumed that the cervix is normal, or that it has an infection, a pre-cancerous lesion or cancer. Most of the lesions seen in the smear are related to infection with the HPV virus.
