Treatment of keratoconus Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL)
Keratoconus is a disease of the cornea most often bilateral, non-inflammatory, characterized by a progressive thinning of the corneal stroma which causes an irregular and progressive deformation of the cornea. This induces an irregular astigmatism, responsible for a more or less significant drop in vision. Myopia is often associated and corneal opacities can appear.
The goal of this treatment is to create the physicochemical bonds between the collagen fibers. The arrangement and mechanical stability of these fibers determine the transparency and shape of the cornea and, consequently, its optical properties.
