Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic nasal condition of unknown cause. It is characterized by the formation of thick, dry scabs in a flared nasal cavity resulting from the progressive wasting, or atrophy, of the nasal lining and underlying bone. Symptoms include fetidity (strong unpleasant odor), nasal crusting / obstruction, nosebleeds, anosmia (loss of smell) or cacosmia (unpleasant olfactory hallucination), secondary infections , nasal deformity, otitis media and even, rarely, extension to the brain and its membranes. The treatment is aimed at reducing the size of the nasal cavities, promoting the regeneration of the normal mucosa, increasing the lubrication of the dry nasal mucosa and improving the vascularization (blood supply) of the nasal cavities.
