Peritoneal dialysis is a type of dialysis which aims to remove wastes such as urea, creatinine, excess potassium or fluid that the kidneys are unable or no longer able to purify from the blood plasma. This medical treatment is indicated in patients with end-stage chronic renal failure.
It purifies the blood by using the peritoneum, the membrane surrounding the abdomen, intestine and other internal organs, as a filter.
Just as effective as hemodialysis, this treatment is performed at home by the patient or with the help of a healthcare professional. He thus enjoys greater autonomy and better socio-professional integration.
